The Hap Nyererei is endemic to the southern part of Lake Victoria, where it is found in the shallow rocky habitat close to shore.
Many geographical variants are known, including 'Anchor Island', 'Igombe Island', 'Luanza', 'Makobe Island', 'Mwanza Gulf', 'Python Island', and 'Ruti Island'.
